In this section we explore some of the latest thinking in nutrition and diet - superfoods, the latest fads and food intolerance.

Superfood or marketing ploy? Almost a day does not go by without another food being claimed to be a 'superfood' - the latest superfood star being beetroot. So what exactly makes something a 'superfood' and why are they hailed as such? What's a wholefood and why should you eat more of them? .

When does a Fad become a trend? Vestibulum libero nisl, porta vel, scelerisque eget, malesuada at, neque. Vivamus eget nibh. Etiam cursus leo vel metus. Nulla facilisi. Aenean nec eros. Vestibulum ante ipsum primis in faucibus orci luctus et ultrices posuere.

They say you are what you eat. Whilst that is true, it is not always the full story, as we investigate here. This is inspired by my own personal mission to loose six stone in weight over the next year. As I believe strongly in balance in life, moderation and that faddy diets are bad for you, I'm going on a journey of discovery. Why not follow my weight loss progress ...

Modern fad and food fallacy? Or a real problem affecting a large section of the population?

There is no doubt that the number of people reporting a food intolerance or allergy is on the increase. So what explains this modern phenonemon?

There are some views that intolerances are caused by man-made pollutants in our environment (such as pesticides), whilst others claim it is the lastest fashion for the middles classes with no foundation in fact. It may, however, be an age old problem that modern research has simply shed a light on.

Over the last decade there has been much research into diet and nutrition - not least in our search for the causes (and cures for) cancer. Could it be that these intolerances always existed, but people did not realise what was making them feel so ill? Or it could be that our 'food on the go' culture has increased our dependancy on processed foods and it is the lack of balance that is making us ill. Perhaps it is both.

My nan used to say "everything in moderation" - it's amazing how her words of wisdom from the turn of the last century are now proving their worth. There can be no better substitute for health than a well-balanced lifestyle and a well-balanced diet.

“... If you've a couple of hours to spare and are interested in either improving your health or losing weight, then I strongly recommend you watch this on the IPlayer...”

Delia Swift, founder of Three Counties Gourmet

Just after New Year, I turned on the TV whilst peeling my way through 25kg of fresh bramley apples (I needed something to keep me going!). Having put off my weight loss due to Christmas, I was delighted to find ITV's 'The World's Best Diet' available on their re-player.

If you have access to this and are interested in losing weight, then I strongly recommend you spend a few hours watching it. It's not only got loads of interesting foodie facts (some of which we've compiled here), but it's also a fascinating - it not totally scientific - test of some of the World's supposed best diets.

I was put off in the first ten minutes when it was revealed that five celebrities woudl be trialling these diets (am I the only one sick and tired of 'celebrity culture'?) but soon became fascinated as they revealed they would be testing what nutritionists felt to be some of the healthiest diets in the world to see which was the best. Forget the weight loss - with my avid interest in food and nutrition, I was hooked.

Each of the five celebrities tested the Indian diet, Japanese diet, Mediterranean diet and - wait for it - the Hollywood A List 'LA - no carbs' diet against the British diet. This would, of course, be a proper British diet as eaten half a century ago when our population was much healthier, despite having lived on rations and faced half a decade of war. Not only would these five celebrities be visiting the locations to learn how to follow food eating habits properly, but after six weeks they would analyse the results to see not only who lost the most weight on the diet, but also who was the healthiest. Needless to say, my interest was piqued.

The results were VERY interesting.
